RICHMOND, Va. (JMU Athletics) – James Madison quarterback Alonza Barnett III has been selected as one of three finalists for the 2024 Bill Dudley Award, which honors the top Division I football player in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Additionally, the Touchdown Club of Richmond rolled out its annual awards, with Barnett being voted the state’s Quarterback of the Year.

Barnett accounted for 3,040 yards and 33 total touchdowns in his 12 starts during the regular season. Named to the midseason watch list for both the Maxwell Award and Davey O’Brien National QB Award, Barnett ranks 11th nationally in point responsibility per game (16.5) and 13th in passing touchdowns (26).

The Honorable Mention All-Sun Belt quarterback led JMU to an 8-4 record after throwing for 2,598 passing yards and 26 touchdowns with only four interceptions. He additionally rushed for 442 yards with a team-leading seven touchdowns on the ground. Barnett is a two-time Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week and also took home National Player of the Week following his seven-touchdown performance at North Carolina.

Barnett becomes JMU’s 17th finalist for the award, which began back in 1990. JMU has won six Dudley Awards all-time, with previous recipients including Rodney Landers (2008), Stephon Robertson (2013), Vad Lee (2014, 2015), Bryan Schor (2016) and Jalen Green (2023).

He is joined by Virginia Tech defensive lineman Antwaun Powell-Ryland and Virginia safety Jonas Sanker on the top-three list for the annual Dudley Award.

The winner of the 2024 Bill Dudley Award will be announced on Friday, Dec. 13 at 7:45 p.m. in a live broadcast on WTVR CBS 6 in Richmond. Streaming of the show live is available on WTVR.com.
