HARRISONBURG, Va. (JMU Athletics) – In a game that was originally scheduled for March 6 but was postponed to Wednesday night due to inclement weather, James Madison baseball run-ruled Richmond, 14-4, in the eighth inning at Veterans Memorial Park for its fifth midweek win of the season.
The Dukes improved to 20-12 and have now won their last four games in a row. The Spiders dropped to 13-20 and have now lost five of their last seven games.
Junior Fenwick Trimble recorded his 50th career multi-hit game to lead the Dukes at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI’s. Redshirt senior Sean Culkin won his first game of the season, as he got the start on the mound and tossed two innings with a strikeout.
How It Happened
First Inning
Aaron Whitley put the first pitch of the game over the left center wall to give Richmond a 1-0 lead.
Second Inning
JMU responded to the leadoff homer with five runs in the second. Redshirt senior Mason Dunaway started the scoring by knocking in junior Ryan Dooley to tie the game. After stealing second, Dunaway scored the go ahead run on a double from junior Jason Schiavone. Following Schiavone’s double, a walk was issued with both runners scoring on freshman Kyle Langley’s first triple of the season. Trimble capped the scoring to make it 5-1 on a run-scoring groundout.
Fourth Inning
Trimble pushed the lead to five at 6-1 with an RBI single, scoring sophomore Wyatt Peifer from second.
Fifth Inning
With two outs, the Dukes worked their way to load the bases with three consecutive walks. Peifer then knocked all three runs in when the diving catch in center field was ruled a dropped ball, pushing JMU’s lead to 9-1.
Sixth Inning
Graduate Brendan O’Donnell gave JMU back-to-back games hitting double-digits in runs with a single with runners on the corners to give the Dukes a 10-1 lead.
Eighth Inning
Richmond scored three runs on a sacrifice fly and a two-run double to make it 10-4.
The Dukes secured the win with a four-spot on the board to go up 14-4. Dooley and redshirt senior Jacob Steinberg both hit two-run doubles to collect the four runs needed for the run rule.
