CONWAY, S.C. (JMU Athletics) – James Madison got out to a 4-0 lead, but a six-run third inning led No. 16 Coastal Carolina to take down the Dukes, 16-6, in seven innings on Sunday afternoon at Spring Brooks Stadium in Sun Belt Conference baseball.
The Dukes fell to 11-11 (3-3 Sun Belt), while the Chanticleers improved to 16-7 (6-0 Sun Belt).
Leading JMU at the plate was redshirt sophomore Clay Thompson, going 2-for-4 with a run scored
How It Happened
Second Inning
Back-to-back singles, each with a runner in scoring position, from senior Wyatt Campbell and sophomore Jack Anderson put JMU ahead 2-0.
Third Inning
The Dukes loaded the bases to bring up senior Jack Cannizzaro, who lined a double into the left field corner to bring two runs in and make it 4-0 in favor of JMU.
Coastal responded by bringing 11 batters to the plate, pushing seven runs across to take a 7-4 lead.
Fourth Inning
Sophomore Reece Moody brought the Dukes within a run of the Chants, hitting a two-run double after juniors Kyle Langley and Ike Schmidly each hit base hits of their own to begin the inning.
A two-run homer from Rex Watson pushed the lead back to three for the Chants, at 9-6.
Fifth Inning
CCU took a 14-6 lead after batting around and scratching across five runs.
Sixth Inning
The Chants took a 10-run lead with a pair of runs.
Game Notes
• All nine batters in the starting lineup recorded a hit for the Dukes.
• JMU batted .571 (8-for-14) with runners on and .545 (6-for-11) with runners in scoring position.
