HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Harrisonburg Police Department is warning residents of a familiar scam mimicking the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
Similar to last year’s EZ Pass text scam, authorities are alerting the community to reports of fraudulent text messages that appear to be sent from the Virginia DMV regarding unpaid penalties.
The fake notification threatening license suspension and potential prosecution begins with: “Final notice from Virginia DMV. Action required. This message confirms a delinquent traffic violation on your account.”
HPD urges those who receive such a text to refrain from clicking the accompanying link, delete the message, and report the sender as junk.
Those who have paid the sender money should report the incident to law enforcement immediately.
