Everence Financial is a faith-based organization that combines financial services with values of stewardship and community. Celebrating 80 years of service this year, Everence helps individuals, organizations and congregations integrate finances with faith through a national team of financial professionals. While its national headquarters is in Goshen, Indiana, Everence also has a local branch in Harrisonburg that provides banking, insurance, and financial services.

One of the Harrisonburg team members and local experts is Chan Gingerich, Financial Services Representative and Health Insurance Specialist who has been with Everence for 20 years. His work focuses on helping individuals navigate Medicare and the Virginia Insurance Marketplace, along with offering support for life insurance, long-term care, and disability coverage.

Medicare Open Enrollment

Every year, Medicare open enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7. This is the period when individuals can make changes to their Medicare plans. Preparing ahead can make the process smoother. Gingrich recommends:

  • Create a My Social Security account at ssa.gov. This allows you to view Social Security statements and apply for a Medicare card.
  • Set up a My Medicare account at mymedicare.gov. This online tool helps you research and manage your Medicare coverage.
  • Complete necessary Part B forms if you delayed enrollment while still working. Employers may also need to complete sections of these forms.

New “Birthday Rule” in Virginia

A significant change took effect on July 1, 2025, with the introduction of the birthday rule. Virginia is now one of only a few states to adopt this policy. Under the rule, individuals who already have Medicare coverage have 60 days from their birthday to switch to another Medicare supplement plan with guaranteed issue rights. This provides flexibility to review coverage options annually.
