HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – Local weather analysts are revealing more information about how a dangerous flash flood was able to sneak up on parts of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County earlier this month.

Paul Helmuth, the Harrisonburg Fire Department’s Deputy Emergency Coordinator, said on Early Mornings Thursday that weather radar on the evening of May 6 showed nothing to worry about – until it did.

“We were calling for heavy rain…no one knew,” Helmuth said. “No one saw the red on the radar because there was none until it came over the city of Harrisonburg and then it stalled, and it sat here for 50 minutes and then moved on.

The flooding swept across several roads and properties near Dayton, but no injuries were reported.
