HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Harrisonburg Fire Battalion Chief and Deputy Fire Marshal Mike Armstrong signed off for the final time yesterday after 36 years of service.

Armstrong began his career in 1989 with the Virginia Department of Forestry. In 2004 he transitioned to Rockingham County Department of Fire & Rescue, and then in 2014 he joined the Harrisonburg Fire Department.

Surrounded by family, friends, and former colleagues, FM-1 was officially out of service after his son, Clayton Armstrong, signed him off for the last time.

“For the last 40 years, you have lived with integrity and purpose in every roll, from a volunteer firefighter, forestry technician, and to your duties as deputy fire marshal. On behalf of the firefighters, officers, Rockingham County Fire and Rescue, Harrisonburg Rockingham Emergency Communications Center, and all citizens of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, thank you for your years of service, Chief.”

A flag also flew over the US Capitol in his honor, which he was then gifted.
