HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — With Harrisonburg City Council recently approving the Quarry Heights development, that could put a major strain on school capacities and could lead to redistricting.

Harrisonburg School Superintendent Dr. Michael Richards discussed that issue at Tuesday night’s school board meeting, stating that Waterman Elementary is already at 28 percent over capacity and they would be one of the schools impacted the most by the housing development.

Richards says he understands redistricting is an emotional thing. “My family was moved 3 times when I lived in Northern Virginia for 4 years. And each time it was very emotional, and we don’t want to do it, if we don’t have to,” he said during the meeting.

Richards says that staff will bring some rezoning rough drafts to the school board next month but he will encourage them not to make a quick decision because the public needs to be aware and involved.
