HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – The Harrisonburg teenager, who was arrested last fall after allegedly tossing a large firework into a crowd, reached a plea deal with prosecutors.

According to online records, Grayson Hall Smith entered an Alford Plea on a charge of malicious assault during a hearing Friday in Rockingham County Circuit Court.

An Alford Plea is when a person does not admit guilt but realizes that the prosecution has enough evidence for a conviction. In exchange for the plea, the other charge of malicious assault was dropped.

The counts stemmed from an incident on Sept. 23 of last year when Smith, 19, was accused of throwing the mortar-style firework into a social gathering on South Main Street. One person was seriously injured in the explosion.

Smith will be sentenced on March 21.
