HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — A Harrisonburg student is suing the Harrisonburg City School Board for allegedly violating the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
Mason Purnhagen, through his parent Lee Purnhagen, filed the suit this week in U.S. District Court in Harrisonburg.
According to the lawsuit, back on March 14th, Lee Purnhagen, on behalf of her son, filed a Request for Due Process Hearing with the Virginia Department of Education asserting that Harrisonburg City Public Schools denied Mason a free appropriate public education.
Two months later, a hearing officer for the Virginia Department of Education – Special Education deemed the issue moot.
The lawsuit seeks to overturn the hearing officer’s decision as well as court costs.
