HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Harrisonburg Police Department (HPD) is investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred just after 8:00 PM on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.

According to a report by Captain Chris Monohan, HPD Officers, along with Harrisonburg Fire Department and Harrisonburg Rescue Squad personnel, were dispatched to the intersection of 4th Street and Stuart Street for a reported collision between a vehicle and an individual operating an electric foot scooter.

When officers arrived on scene, they located the driver of the scooter unresponsive in the street, and lifesaving measures were attempted by EMS. The driver of the scooter, John Berrett, 51, of Greenville, VA, was pronounced deceased at Sentara RMH.

HPD’s Accident Reconstruction Team and HPD Patrol Officers spoke with the driver of the vehicle and multiple witnesses of the crash and determined that the scooter was traveling East on 4th Street when he disregarded the stop sign, entered the intersection, and collided with the vehicle as it was traveling North on Stuart Street. The driver of the vehicle reportedly immediately stopped and called 911.

No charges have been filed related to this incident.
