HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – The Harrisonburg Planning Commission held a work session last night to discuss updates to the city’s Zoning and Subdivision Ordinance.
Several topics in both ordinances are being reviewed, including off-street parking requirements, enhancing walkability and housing density, among others.
They also weighed whether to proactively rezone properties in the city, which Community Development Director Thanh Dhang advised to approach cautiously, keeping future developers in mind.
“If we proactively rezone everything because our comprehensive plan calls for that, we lose out on the opportunity that they might proffer build certain infrastructure for us if we just proactively initiate that rezoning without them going through the rezoning process,” Dhang said.
The potential updates to Harrisonburg’s zoning ordinance will be the first since the mid 1990s.
