HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – Harrisonburg Public Works has launched a new free Green Restaurant Certification Program.

The Eateries Acting Towards Sustainability (EATS) certification will acknowledge local businesses’ sustainability efforts and encourage them to continue to pursue their environmental efforts. The program is voluntary and available to those in the food service industry who choose to participate, with three businesses already enrolled.

EATS aims to prioritize waste reduction and position the Harrisonburg restaurant industry and broader hospitality sector as pioneers in sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.

Harrisonburg Public Works is inviting members of the local food service industry to participate in EATS. Keith Thomas, the Sustainability and Environmental Manager for the City’s Public Works Department, explained why businesses may want to participate in the program during the Tuesday night City Council meeting.

“Increased community presence and expanded customer base and marketing opportunities around the sustainability steps they’re taking create a stronger relationship with their customers,” Thomas said. “Also, potential savings from energy and waste reduction activities and then creating stronger relationships with other businesses.”
