HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — A lawsuit between three teachers and Harrisonburg City Public Schools came to an end yesterday.
According to a statement by “Alliance Defending Freedom,” the legal advocacy group representing the teachers, the lawsuit was filed in June of 2022 alleging school policies requiring the use of students’ preferred pronouns in the classroom violated the Virginia Constitution’s Free Speech Clause, the Virginia Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and other legal provisions by compelling educators to speak a message to which they object.
Teachers Deborah Figliola, Kristine Marsh, and Laura Nelson filed to dismiss the lawsuit, after H-C-P-S agreed educators “do not have to ask students to share their pronouns, and the teachers may use pronouns consistent with students’ biological sex.”
The Harrisonburg City Public School Board said in a statement that their “focus has been to support all students and employees with dignity and respect.”
