HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Harrisonburg City Council did not make a decision on the proposed 265-unit apartment building to be built around South Main and Liberty Streets.
City Manager Ande Banks explained during Tuesday night’s meeting that five community facilitators met with city staff and the developer recently and they were crafting a proposal for the developer moving forward.
“I’m hoping that we’ll see an update here in the next couple of days and see what that looks like, as far as how the community engagement is going to be structured. As soon as that happens, we will certainly, of course, assist in getting those meetings out to the community so that they can get engaged,” Banks said.
Meanwhile, Councilmember Laura Dent said during an interview with Early Mornings before the meeting, that she was for the build.
“Harrisonburg IS a city. So, we have to grow inward, and to some degree upward, because we have limited space. We can’t just sprawl out like they do in the county. And, furthermore, if we don’t keep building within the city, we lose both the people and the tax revenues to the county,” Dent said.
Council members will discuss the proposed six-story apartment complex, known as “The Link” at a future meeting.
