AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) — A student at Fort Defiance High School has been arrested after making a bomb threat to the school.

According to a social media post from the Augusta County Sheriff’s office, school administrators were notified about the threat shortly after 2:15 p.m. and immediately contacted authorities. The student who made the threat was located and an investigation was launched.

Police determined that there was no credible threat to the school, its students, or staff. The student was charged with a felony under Virginia Code 18.2-83, Threats to Bomb or Damage a Building.

“This investigation was handled very quickly, and the student was taken into custody without incident,” Sheriff Donald L. Smith said in the release.

In the post, the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office and Augusta County Public Schools urged parents to monitor their children’s social media use and educate them about the serious consequences of making threats, even if they are meant as jokes or to seek attention. Virginia law makes it a felony to threaten death or bodily injury to a person or family member, to people on school property, or to healthcare providers.

Deputy Leslie Snyder told Rocktown Now that this incident was not related to a shooting threat made to an unnamed Augusta County school by a student earlier on Friday.
