James Madison Men’s Basketball received another verbal commitment on Wednesday as former Southern Indiana guard A.J. Smith announced on social media that he’ll play for the Dukes next season.
The 6-6 Edwardsville, Illinois native started 31 games as a sophomore for the Screaming Eagles this past season as he averaged 13.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. Smith averaged 30.2 minutes per game as he shot 41.3 percent (138-334) from the field, 27.5 percent (30-109) from behind the three-point line, and 78.9 percent (120-152) from the foul line.
Smith played in 18 games as a true freshman during the 2022-23 season and averaged 1.6 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. He had career highs of 27 points, 16 rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks over his two seasons at USI.
Smith is the third transfer to verbally commit this week to play at JMU next season as Eddie Ricks III (Morehead State) and Justin Taylor (Syracuse) also will be Dukes during the 2024-25 season.
