ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Former Rockingham County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Oskar Scheikl is speaking up about the new proposed flag ban by the new RCPS Board, which would ban any flag that isn’t the US, state, or county flag.
In a post on Facebook, Dr. Scheikl describes how most schools in the corporation have a display of flags that represent where each student is from. He says that he has never heard a complaint about the displays and says “he’s heard just the opposite.”
Dr. Scheikl says the displays will have to be removed under the proposed policy and quotes new chair Matt Cross saying he wants students to feel proud and full of emotions when they stand for the flag. However, Dr. Scheikl noted that not all students and staff members are US citizens and doing that may violate their country’s citizenship rules.
Dr. Scheikl says he was reminded of this rule from Austria when trying to maintain dual citizenship.
