HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – Harrisonburg City Councilman Dany Fleming has been appointed as Vice Chair of the National League of Cities’ University Communications Council.

Fleming will lead a group of other local leaders working to develop resources and programs for more than 750 university communities across the nation.

In a release, Fleming said he’s committed to working closely with Harrisonburg’s universities to improve the city for the entire community.

“We’ve made creating a thriving educational epicenter a key goal of our City vision plan and part of making this a flourishing community is ensuring that Harrisonburg is a hub of innovation, technology and workforce development,” Fleming said. “Working with the NLC’s UCC will help our City accomplish that goal.”

Fleming has also been appointed to NLC’s Finance, Administration and Intergovernmental Relations (FAIR) Committee, where he will advise the NLC’s federal advocacy agenda. He will also guide policy priorities on taxes that affect cities, towns and villages; voting and voter protections; and advancing housing finance legislation.

Fleming added that the FAIR Committee’s work will allow Harrisonburg to connect with federal departments and shape their policies.

“I look forward to advocating for our community around the challenges and opportunities we face in Harrisonburg and for the federal resources and partnerships that can help support our goals and vision,” he said.

NLC President David Sander, who serves as mayor of Rancho Cordova, Ca., announced Fleming’s appointment on Monday.

“Under [Fleming’s] leadership, the council will ensure that all of our cities, towns and villages have access to ideas and resources they can use to thrive,” Sander said. “I’m also thrilled to have Councilman Fleming serve on NLC’s Finance, Administration and Intergovernmental Relations Federal Advocacy Committee this year, and look forward to working with him to strengthen the federal-local partnership.”

Some members of the Harrisonburg City Council will greet NLC representatives visiting Harrisonburg on Wednesday, as part of a tour commemorating the organization’s 100th anniversary.
