RCOKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Rockingham County and City of Harrisonburg Clerk of Circuit Court Chaz W. Haywood announced today the return of five historic records that were recently conserved and digitized through the 2025 Circuit Court Records Preservation (CCRP) Program Grant. The $18,311.50 grant award was first announced in March, and the project has now been completed.

The preserved records include:

  • · Deed Book 16, 1878 – 1879 (conserved as two volumes)
  • · Land Book 1879, Part 1
  • · Land Book 1879, Part 2
  • · Land Book 1896, Part 1
  • · Land Book 1896, Part 2

These records document land ownership and transactions in Rockingham County during the late 19th century, a period of significant transition in the Shenandoah Valley. They were conserved and digitized by Kofile in Greensboro, North Carolina. Both the restored volumes and their digital images are available for public access at the Clerk’s Office and online.

Clerk Haywood stated in a release, “For generations, families have come to the courthouse to trace land ownership, family histories, and the development of our community. The preservation of these volumes ensures that we can continue providing accurate records for research and education, linking the past to the present in a way no other source can.”
