NELSON COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) – UPDATE: Fire crews have now contained a significant mountain fire in the northwest section of Nelson County near Humpback rocks.

The uncontrolled fire started after 3:00 p.m. on Thursday just off Cherry Grove Road in Nelson County.

According to a statement from Wintergreen Fire and Rescue, helicopters gathered water from a nearby pond to extinguish the flames, alongside the efforts of multiple fire departments and dozer crews.

Authorities note that, even though the fire is now contained, smoke will still be visible in the surrounding area for the next few days.
