ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Ernest Calhoun, who narrowly lost his race for the Rockingham County School Board earlier this month, is asking for a recount.

Calhoun, who lost by 18 votes, filed a petition this week with the Rockingham County Circuit Court, asking for a recount at taxpayers’ expense.

“Well, you never know when it’s something that close. It wouldn’t take much for a scanner to read wrong or a printer to print wrong or a person to have the wrong thing in the wrong place. I don’t blame anybody, but I believe that just human nature and/or mechanical error, there’s always a reason to believe that if it was looked at again, that it may come out differently,” said Calhoun.

The first step in the process took place this morning, November 20, 2025, in the circuit court. A three-judge panel will then determine a date next month to meet and decide on the recount.

But for now, it appears that incumbent Jackie Lohr has retained her District One seat on the school board.
