HARRISONBURG, Va. (EMU Athletics) – EMU Head Women’s Soccer Coach Leonardo Alcoreza recently announced the hiring of Katie Maher as the team’s assistant coach.

“Katie and I have connected really well in a short amount of time, and it’s clear we share the same vision, ambition, and passion for this program,” Alcoreza said. “I have no doubt that we’ll form a strong coaching partnership that will help push EMU Women’s Soccer forward.”

Maher joins the Royals following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at VMI, working primarily with the goalkeepers. In 2024, the Keydets went 6-11-2, the program’s winningest season since 2018. During her time at VMI, Maher also served as an Assistant Director of Career Services.

Maher played four years of college soccer as a goalkeeper at the NCAA Division II level. In three seasons at Concord University in West Virginia, Maher started 53 games in net, accruing a career goals against average of 0.94. During her junior season in 2019, Maher posted an impressive 0.53 GAA and earned an All-Mountain East Conference Honorable Mention distinction, helping the Mountain Lions to an MEC championship. Maher then transferred to Limestone University for her senior season in 2021, starting 14 of 16 games at goalkeeper for the Saints.

“Katie brings a strong background in goalkeeping and NCAA coaching experience that will greatly benefit our players,” Alcoreza said. “Her passion, energy, and ambition align perfectly with our vision for the future of EMU Women’s Soccer, and I’m excited to work alongside her to build something special.”

Maher holds a United Soccer Coaches goalkeeping license. She began her coaching duties on March 1.
