Elaine Kathryn Newman McDorman, 78, a resident of Clover Hill, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2024 She was the daughter of the late Marion and Marjorie Newman. She is survived by her husband, Lenny, whom she married on December 26, 1976.

She is survived by her siblings, Ken Newman (Denise), Joyce Trevolt (Roy), Bob Newman (Debbie), Phil Newman (Melinda); brothers-in-law, Joe McDorman (Sharon), Lewis McDorman (Patty); sisters-in-law, Bonnie McDorman, Ronda Huffman (Doug), Libbie Ritchie (Terry); nine nieces; fifteen nephews; nine grandnieces; and fifteen grandnephews.

Elaine was born October 5, 1945 in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She graduated from Turner Ashby High School in 1964. Elaine completed her Bachelor of Education from Madison College in 1970. She also received a master’s in education from James Madison University in 1977. She taught ninth grade Earth Science for 32 years at Buffalo Gap High School. She was happy to be treasurer and board member for the Clover Hill Bucks, and treasurer and volunteer for the West Rockingham Food Bank. She also was a member of the Faithful Caterers and made prayer quilts at her church.

Layne, as the family referred to her, was a very good softball player and a very good golfer. She loved to go on trips related to teaching. She also loved the nine dogs that she and Lenny adopted. She was very interested in and did a large amount of work related to the Newman family genealogy. She was also a wonderful cook and loved hosting amazing dinners in her home.

Layne came from a large family with five children and always enjoyed visiting with them as well as with Lenny’s large family. She loved playing games and would spend entire evenings playing games. Layne will be missed by the Clover Hill community, Clover Hill Global Methodist Church of which she as an active member from birth, as well as her family.

Reverend David Burch will conduct a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at Clover Hill Global United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Clover Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 6, 2024, at the funeral home.
