Edwin “Kelly” McAvoy, 84, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2024, peacefully surrounded by his family. The son of the late Adam and Alethia Thompson McAvoy, he was born October 2, 1939, in Onego, West Virginia.

Kelly grew up on a dairy farm in the Cross Keys area and attended Montevideo High School. He was employed with Riddleberger Brothers for 42 years until retirement and was a member of Mt. Olivet Christian Church in Elkton. In his spare time, Kelly enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling and watching westerns.

Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Carlene Hensley McAvoy. Also surviving are two sons, Steve McAvoy and life partner, Milly Stanley of Verona and Scott McAvoy and wife, Gina of Harrisonburg; three grandchildren, Troy McAvoy of Rawley Springs, Amanda Shultz and husband, Jeremiah of Harrisonburg and Adrianne Berry and wife, Trinity of Oceanside, California; three great-grandchildren, Lyla Wood, Desmond Berry and Westyn Shultz and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Anthony McAvoy and Lincoln “Link” McAvoy.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with Pastor Wayne Wright officiating. Interment will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., on Monday, April 8, 2024, at the funeral home.
