Edna M. Mitchell, 103, of 161 Lewis St., passed away peacefully at her residence on Sunday, August 04, 2024.
Mrs. Mitchell was born Edna Marie Franklin in Bryant Hollow, VA on June 01, 1921 to Alvirta Mae (Mason) Franklin and Glodie James Franklin.
Edna, along with her four sisters, grew up in the small close-knit community of Bryant Hollow with Mt Sinai Baptist Church as the hub and center of that community.
In 1943 she married Harold W. Mitchell and moved to Harrisonburg, VA where she made her home for the remainder of her life.
Edna worked in housekeeping, child care and catering for many families and businesses throughout Harrisonburg. She retired from the food services department of JMU after 24 years of service.
Edna and Harold were members of John Wesley Methodist Church and later transferred membership to Asbury United Methodist Church. They were active participants in church and community life and members of various committees and organizations.
She enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, cooking, sewing and knitting. She also found time to be an advocate of a healthy life style which included taking fitness classes and walking with the “Stride Inside” mall walkers. From 1991 on She was a member of the RMH Wellness Center where she participated in exercise and swimming classes.
Edna is preceded in death by her husband, Harold W. Mitchell and her son, Glodie F. Mitchell. She was also preceded by her four sisters, Ethel Mae Fields, Mildred Davis, Margie Smith, Gladys Franklin, and her nephew Robert L. Franklin
She leaves to cherish her memory: Hattie M. Chadwick (daughter), Andrea Chadwick and Michele Chadwick (granddaughters), (nephews) Melvin Davis, Steven Davis and Henry Rudolph Fields (Donna), Genevieve Franklin (niece), and a host of family members and friends.
Edna will be loved and always remembered for her spontaneous sense of humor, her friendliness, her spunkiness, her kindness, and for her strong faith and commitment to her church.

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 13, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
Funeral Service will be Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at 2 p.m., at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with Pastor Susan Reaves of Asbury United Methodist Church officiating.
