East Rockingham High School graduate Tyler Nickel announced on social media Wednesday night that he is transferring to Vanderbilt to play basketball for former JMU head coach Mark Byington.
Nickel heads to Nashville after one season at Virginia Tech. The former Eagle played in 33 games and averaged 8.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game this past season for the Hokies. He shot 39.9 percent from the three-point line as he made 59 three-point field goals, and he shot 82.0 percent (41-50) from the free throw line.
Nickel played at North Carolina as a freshman and averaged 2.1 points per game in 25 games played.
He has two years of eligibility remaining.
