FOREST, Va. (BC Athletics) – Jaelan Mathews of the Bridgewater College football team has been named the ODAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Mathews had eight total tackles in Saturday’s win including 2.5 tackles for loss. By far the biggest stop of the game for the Eagles came by way of Mathews as Millsaps drove down the field and had a chance to tie the ballgame in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. On third down and goal at the Eagles’ one-yard line Mathews punched the ball free from the Majors’ ball carrier and the Eagles fell on it to maintain the lead at a crucial moment.
The Columbia, Md. native also added an important tackle for loss on Millsaps’ final series as he and Kyle Beer combined for the sack forcing a fourth down and long for the Majors as they stared down a two-score deficit with just over two minutes to play.
The Eagles will enjoy a bye week before heading to Ferrum to battle the Panthers in the ODAC opener on Oct. 5 at 2 p.m.
