NEW ORLEANS (JMU Athletics) – James Madison senior Enrique Garcia Barelles earned the nod for Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
The Dukes had a perfect week, shutting out then-No. 14 Georgetown and Liberty by scores of 1-0 and 2-0, respectively, to move to 2-0-3.
Garcia Barelles anchored a backline that began the week by taking down Georgetown. The Hoyas were held to their second lowest output of the season for corner kicks (four) and shots on goal (five). The Dukes then held Liberty to similar lows, as the Flames were held to their lowest shots on goal output of the season at four and their second lowest amount of corner kicks at five.
The pair of shutouts were the third and fourth of the season for the Dukes.
It is the second Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week honor for JMU this season, as junior Sebastian Conlon was tabbed the inaugural winner for this season.
JMU returns to the pitch Tuesday, Sept. 17, as it travels to Mount St. Mary’s for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
