LURAY, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – A section of Dark Hollow Falls Trail in Shenandoah National Park will be closed for repairs for about two weeks beginning Aug. 27.
According to a news release from Shenandoah National Park, washed-out sections of the trail pose a fall risk for hikers.
The Dark Hollow Falls Trailhead is at mile 50.5 on Skyline Drive. The trail draws hikers for its scenic waterfall and proximity to Big Meadows.
The Rose River Trail, featuring waterfalls including Dark Hollow Falls, will not be affected by the closure. Hikers can still access it but not the Dark Hollow Falls Trail.
The Skyline Drive Trailhead for Rose River Trail is mile 49.4.
Shenandoah’s trail crew will start work on Aug. 27, and aim to finish by September 10. The washed-out trail sections do not allow a safe detour, so this part of the trail will stay closed while crews repair it.
Story of the Forest Trail in the Big Meadows area closed on Aug. 10, due to damage from Hurricane Debbie. A bridge on the trail washed out, and crews are working on a temporary crossing to reopen the trail.
