PAGE COUNTY, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – A Washington D.C. man drowned Sunday afternoon in the Shenandoah River.
Page County Sheriff Chad Cubbage reported in a news release that shortly after 4 p.m., a 911 call came in about a possible drowning in the river near Compton Rapids.
Authorities responded to the scene and based on witness accounts, the victim was swimming and became distressed, went under and did not resurface.
The victim was pulled from the water by other bystanders who attempted to perform life-saving measures until emergency medical crews arrived.
The victim was identified as 37-year-old Melvin Sorto. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cubbage says there is no suspected foul play, but alcohol is believed to be a factor.
