HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) – The City of Harrisonburg is seeking public feedback on the Draft 2025 Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program (NTCP) Guide.

Harrisonburg Public Works will host an open house Tuesday, April 29, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Harrisonburg City Council Chambers, 409 S. Main St., where community members will learn about the NTCP update effort and have an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback on the proposed traffic calming process.

The 2025 NTCP will update various aspects of the existing 2012 NTCP relating to:

  • Process
  • Community Effort
  • Thresholds & Criteria
  • Equity Considerations
  • Clarity about what warrants traffic calming

Some significant changes being considered are transitioning to a more data driven scoring system, expanding the criteria that determines traffic calming need, streamlining the number of steps required and posting the scores of eligible requested streets each year.

“We are excited to invite the community to our open house to explain how the City approaches each traffic calming request and hear the community’s feedback on our program guide draft processes,” Transportation Planner James Polhamus explained. “We are working toward publishing streamlined decision-making processes so that they are clear and consistent, serving as a guide for our staff and a resource for our community members.”

A questionnaire will be available at the open house to collect public thoughts/questions and will be available digitally until May 18. Written or oral questions and comments may be submitted to Brittany Clem-Hott by emailing brittany.clem-hott@harrisonburgva.gov or calling 540-434-5928 before or after the open house.
