HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – Residents in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County can get rid of their household hazardous waste this weekend.

From 8 a.m. until noon, on Saturday, May 11, local residents can take solvents, paints, fuels and other items to the Rockingham County Landfill on Greendale Road.

City and county officials remind folks that the event is for residential households and not commercial. Farm wastes will not be accepted.

Items that will be accepted are as follows:

Solvents

  • Mineral Spirits
  • Paint Thinner
  • Turpentine
  • Acetone
  • Naphtha
  • Petroleum Spirits
  • Methyl Alchohol

Paints

  • Oil-based exterior, interior and primer paints; stains
  • Tung oil
  • Polyurethane

Fuels

  • Gasoline
  • Diesel
  • Chainsaw fuel
  • Kerosene
  • Heating Oil

Fluids

  • Brake
  • Transmission
  • Power steering

Other

  • Lubrication oil
  • Hydraulic oil
  • Syringes and needles
  • Herbicides and pesticides
  • Fertilizer

Items not accepted:

  • Any waste not listed above
  • Latex paint
  • Unlabeled containers
  • Chlorinated solvents
  • Methylene chloride
  • Any container over five gallons in size
