HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — June is National Pollinator Month, and the Friendly City is hosting several events to celebrate.
Harrisonburg has created several pollinator corridors around the city to make pathways of gardens and meadows with native pollinator flowers, grasses, and trees. These areas keep local ecosystems working by providing pollinators areas to travel, rest, and feed.
On Tuesday, June 4, the Harrisonburg Farmers Market will have pollinator themed goodies and information stations to learn all about pollinators from 8am to 1pm. There will also be two different Guided Pollinator Walking Tours to see the pollinator corridors at 10:30 and 1:30, starting at Liberty Park.
A Bee Hotel Workshop will be Tuesday, June 11, at 2pm in Purcell Park to see how to attract solitary bees and other pollinators to your garden. Join Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation and Public Works in building a pollinator hotel for your yard. First come, first serve with one kit given per family. Once your hotel is complete, participants will learn how to use iNaturalist to identify local pollinator plants.
On Friday, June 21, from 11am to 1pm, you can bring your lunch out to Liberty Park to chat with City staff about pollinators, what to plant, native plants, pollinator-friendly practices, and more. Pick up your very own pollinator plant as you enjoy the beauty of the flowers in Liberty Park.
Celebrating the Firefly will June 25, 8:30pm – 10:00pm at Heritage Oaks Golf Course. Enjoy the longest day of the year and the spectacle of thousands of fireflies. Enjoy a short educational session discussing the different types of fireflies in our area and why they are beneficial.
