AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) – The brother of Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith reached a plea deal with prosecutors on one of his cases.
According to online records, Ronald Smith pleaded guilty to a drug possession charge during a hearing Tuesday afternoon in Staunton Circuit Court.
In exchange, prosectors dropped two other charges. A judge then sentenced the 42-year-old Smith to two years in prison with all of it suspended.
That case stemmed from an incident in October of 2023 in which he crashed his vehicle near Churchville Avenue and tried to flee from police afterwards. He was eventually restrained by officers and taken into custody.
Meanwhile, he is scheduled to go to trial in September after an incident on December 26th of 2023 when authorities claimed he stole a semi-truck from the sheriff’s property and led authorities on a chase.
