FOREST, Va. (BC Athletics) – Jay Garcia of the Bridgewater College women’s basketball team has been named the ODAC Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Eagles in a week where they eclipsed their best start to a season since 1997.
Garcia opened the week by dropping a career-high 26 points and tallying 13 rebounds on Wednesday night as the Eagles knocked off No. 6 Washington & Lee 63-49 at home for the program’s first win over a ranked opponent under Coach Stephanie Flamini’s leadership. Garcia also combined with Jaden Alsberry to shut down the General’s D3Hoops.Com Preseason First Team All-American Mary Schleusner and hold her to just a single point over the game’s final 20 minutes.
The Harrisonburg native followed that performance with 12 rebounds and a block on the road Saturday afternoon as the Eagles took him a hard fought 39-36 victory over Ferrum. Garcia’s performance anchored an effort that saw BC hold its third-straight opponent to under 30% from the floor.
Bridgewater sits at 9-0 for the first time since the 1997-98 season and is seeking the program’s first national attention since the Eagles earned national votes in the D3Hoops.Com Top 25 on Jan. 2, 2011. BC is back in action in Puerto Rico as the Eagles head south following the exam break for clashes with St. Joseph and SUNY Oneota on Dec. 18 & 19.
