LYNCHBURG, Va. (BC Athletics) – Bridgewater College women’s basketball cruised to a 67-37 win over Lynchburg on the road Saturday.
Records: BCE (17-1 Overall, 10-0 ODAC), UL (6-10 Overall, 3-6 ODAC)
How It Happened
• The Eagles got on the board first with a smooth layup by Aylin Humpherys. UL pursued the first lead change halfway into the first quarter off a three-point play, but Riley Corcoran drove hard to the basket to draw a foul and tie the game back up. Corcoran’s active hands got a piece of one to set up the fastbreak transition to perfection with the gentle lay-in to the hoop by Jay Garcia. A quick lead change gave the Hornets control again with a couple second-chance makes. However, BCE weathered the short scoring surge to reclaim the lead to close out the first quarter with a five-point gain, 15-10.
• Stephanie Flamini and company roared on in the second quarter piecing together an 11-point lead early in the second. BCE got a handle on the offensive glass, executing on second-chance shots. Garcia then helped the Eagles to their largest lead of the game so far grabbing the defensive board and taking it inside for the slick jumper. The Eagles kept a 16-point lead as the buzzer sounded at the half.
• As the third quarter rolled on, BCE continued its stingy defense containing the paint and holding the Hornets off to take contested shots from the perimeter. From a quick transition set piece, the Eagles stormed down court as My’la Green attacked the paint for an offensive board and abruptly pulled out to cash the open three-point shot helping them to a large 22-point advantage. Then, Jasmine Griffen closed out the quarter with another three, making it 50-28 Bridgewater.
• BCE continued to push forward without letting up, as it went on a huge 11-0 scoring run convincingly putting the game out of reach for the Hornets. The largest lead of the night came from the help of Rosemary Pierson as the quick lay-in put the Eagles up by 32. The Hornets got the ball back to drop in another two-pointer, but Bridgewater held off any solid scoring run for the rest of the quarter to close out the game.
Game Notes
• The Eagles displayed another strong performance off the bench with 27 bench points to Lynchburg’s six.
• Bridgewater’s defense forced another poor shooting night for opponents, as the Hornets shot 30.6% from the field. Also defensively, the Eagles got after each loose ball converting 16 points off turnovers.
• Transfer Jasmine Griffin dropped in the highest point total for the Eagles while also posting the most points since joining the Eagles (16). Griffin also dished out six assists.
• Jay Garcia stood tall on the defensive end, rejecting four shots. The forward also collected 11 points and six boards.
