BRIDGEWATER, VA (Rocktown Now) – For the first time since 2003, Bridgewater College won the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC) Applied Ethics Bowl competition, besting 15 teams from colleges across Virginia. The annual event was held February 13 at the University of Richmond.
BC’s winning team was comprised of:
- Ifeatu Udokwu, a senior psychology major from Abuja, Nigeria;
- Laine Anthony, a junior business administration major from Beaverdam, Va.;
- Madison Lizarraga, a junior political science major from Los Angeles, Ca.; and,
- Isaac Plange, a junior engineering major from Takoradi, Ghana.
The team was led by faculty coordinator Dr. Matthew Lamb, Instructor of Philosophy, who said he was particularly impressed by how well the BC team responded to the pressure of the debate. Teams from BC have participated in the ethics bowl every year since its founding in 2000.
A program of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges, 16 student teams from independent colleges and universities located throughout the Commonwealth deliberated over four rounds of case studies with ethical dilemmas related to ethics and business. The teams presented their analysis, positions and recommendations to panels of judges comprised of business, professional and community leaders from all over the Commonwealth of Virginia.
“This win illustrates the incredible gifts and talents our students bring to the table,” said Dr. Betsy Hayes, Dean of the Rhodes School of Arts and Humanities. “In addition, they need to be good speakers, good listeners and good problem solvers—all things that we work to teach them while they are here at BC.”
