BRIDGEWATER, Va. (BC Athletics) – Bridgewater baseball exploded in the later innings to secure a 15-6 win over Mary Baldwin at home Tuesday.
Records: BCE (7-3), MBU (0-8)
How It Happened
• Although Mary Baldwin entered the matchup with a winless record, it did not start out like an easy win for the Eagles. Not until the fifth inning did the Eagles find traction to pull ahead. The Fighting Squirrels stayed toe-to-toe with the Eagles for much of the early innings. Once the Eagles found their zone in the box, the offense became too much to bear.
• BCE got the scoring going early as Trent Holland put a ball out to the outfield to knock in Nick Stavros. However, the next inning came and MBU was ready to go, racking up four runs in the second inning with a pair of RBI singles and a blasted two-run double. The Eagles slowly crawled back into close territory with the Fighting Squirrels as Chandler Valbak launched a homer over the left field wall. Bransen Hensley then helped to score in Jake Harris by getting a piece of one to force a fielder’s choice, then an ill-advised play helped to set up the scored run by Stavros.
• MBU tacked on another run hoping to keep the Eagles away with a home run, but BCE fired away offensively with a clinical approach at the plate. Waiting for the right pitch, each hit and persistent effort to get on base made it hard to restrain the Eagles. Seven runs were poured on in the fifth inning as Zack Chadwell riled up the dugout with a solid one-run double. Lucas Bauer got the ball in play to score in Chadwell. Then, it was Stavros’s turn to break the score open, singling for the Camden Herron scored run.
• As the lineup came back around in the fifth inning, Lucas Bauer scored on a wild pitch and Holland took the sacrifice fly to score Stavros. Following up that inning, the Eagles locked in at the plate walking in three straight runners to make it 14-5.
• The Eagles got the final run two innings later, confidently closing the game out as Chase Ford earned an RBI sac fly. MBU tried to get the offense going in the ninth loading the bases with a scored run, but Mitchell Vedder closed the deal to get back-to back strikeouts.
Game Notes
• Zack Chadwell led the way in the offensive stats category going 2-for-3 along with four RBI’s and a scored run.
• Nick Stavros and Chandler Valbak also put up strong offensive performances as Valbak logged three RBI’s and Stavros crossed home three times.
• Lucas Cash came in to relieve Jade Isidro in the third inning and turned in impressive marks along with the win (4 innings pitched, 7 strikeouts, 1 hit, 1 run, 1 walk)
