HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – A Staunton man who was arrested last week for child abuse now faces a murder charge after his alleged victim succumbed to his injuries.

Shane Campbell, 24, was arrested on Friday, Aug. 30, as a result of an investigation into the assault of a child that occurred the day before.

He was initially charged with Aggravated Malicious Wounding and Felony Abuse and Neglect of a Child.

However, Staunton Police Captain Chad Kauffman has reported that the victim in this case died Monday at the University of Virginia Medical Center. As a result, Campbell has been charged with Second Degree Murder.

He remains incarcerated at Middle River Regional Jail.
