ARLINGTON, Va. (BC Athletics) – The Bridgewater College men’s basketball team came up just short against the defending Atlantic East Champion Marymount on the road on Tuesday night.
Final Score: Marymount 77, Bridgewater 69
Records: Bridgewater 2-1; Marymount 1-1
How It Happened
• Marymount got on the board first with a second-chance effort from long range, but BC replied quickly as back-to-back buckets by Aaron Oates put the Eagles in front early. The teams traded buckets and the lead until a quick five-point MU swing made it 13-8 for the Saints. BC replied with a three-pointer from Will Dunlap and a pair of makes at the stripe from Oates to knot the game back up at 15-15, but another 5-0 MU spirt pushed the lead back out.
• BC pulled back to within a pair midway through the second half, but Marymount swung the momentum and stretched the lead out to as much as nine at 31-22 with 5:48 to play in the first half. Dunlap answered the call on the next possession as he drilled a three-pointer on a dish from mason Ramey and started to swing the momentum just a touch. MU replied, but a layup by Cooper and two more free throws by Oates kept BC rolling. MU stretched the lead back out to eight, but an 80 BC run tied the game up just before the half with long-range makes from Oates and Dunlap. Marymount scored twice just before the end of the period to make it 41-37 after 20 minutes.
• The Eagles fell behind by double-figures early in the second half but eventually reeled the Saints back in slowly but surely. BC went on a roll behind seven points from Jordan Cooper to draw back to just a two-point deficit at 56-54 with 10:50 to lay after Cooper found Oates on the low block.
• BC stayed within a score until a 6-0 Saints run made it 64-56 with 7:32 to play. MU hovered around an eight-point advantage until 3:13 left as Taylor Fincham polished off a 6-0 BC run to make it 68-66 and put the pressure back on the home team. Woody Machado made one-of-two at the charity stripe on BC’s next possession to pull to within a pair, but MU stretched the lead back out to 72-67 just north of a minute. Cooper had a clutch layup to lice the lead back down to three, but a three-pointer by the Saints with 46 seconds left proved to be the dagger as a BC empty possession and the necessary foul made it 77-69 at the horn.
Match Notes
• Oates and Cooper paced all scorers again with 20 and 16 points respectively. Ramey added a career-high eight points as well, while Dunlap drilled a trio of three-pointers to tie his career-best.
• Winston Moore led MU with 15 points including a trio of makes from long range and an efficient 6-for-8 from the floor. Miles Phillips tossed in a game-high eight rebounds as well.
• Both teams shot extremely well with MU firing at 50% from the floor and BC just behind at 48%. Marymount’s 47.8% clip from long range ultimately made the difference late.
