Barbara Catherine Mooberry Ritchie “Nurse Barb”, 68, went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, May 4, 2024 after a fierce battle with cancer. Mrs. Ritchie was born May 25, 1955 in Huntington, IN, and was the daughter of the late Stanley Amos and Anna Floss Saufley Mooberry. In addition to her parents, Barbara is preceded in death by her brothers; Carroll David Mooberry and Myron Daniel Mooberry. She was raised in Virginia by her grandparents, George and Violet Saufley.
Barbara loved many things growing up, being on the farm, helping in the kitchen, and playing the piano, but most importantly was her love for the Lord. As she got older, she fell in love with helping others. She developed a true passion to be a nurse, to help and serve others. Despite all adversity, she worked tirelessly to become a nurse caring for others. She began her career at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, and after 28 years, she decided to care for children at John Wayland Elementary School in Bridgewater, VA for an additional 20 years. She gave everything to her “kids” and was known as “Nurse Barb.” She went above and beyond and she always did the best to care and provide for everyone at the school. In addition to being a nurse, she was a former member of the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad. She had a servants heart and was the most caring and compassionate person in this world.
In her spare time, Barbara enjoyed traveling. Her favorite place was The Inn at Christmas Place in Pigeon Forge, TN. She was an avid baker and loved to cook. She could bake everything from cookies, to cakes, to cupcakes and everything in between. They were the best tasting baked goods in the world!
Barbara was a devout follower of God, deeply rooted in her faith. She actively participated in the religious community, attending Mt. Olivet United Brethren Church and serving as both a former member and elder at Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church. With her musical talents, she adorned the services with her piano skills and voice at church. Beyond the church walls, her devotion to the Lord continued as she would sing Gospel songs within the community.
Barbara was the best wife and mother anyone could ever ask for. She married her husband, Danny Ritchie on November 27, 1976. She was a devoted wife and mother to both Sarah and Matthew. She brought glory to God in everything she did and all the love she shared. It was her passion to lets Gods light shine through her. She was always on the go at a hundred miles an hour, many times to exhaustion. She would leave notes or loving messages to people to let them know that God loves them always.
A true child of God who lived to bring Him Glory. Through her life we saw the image of God. In addition to her husband, Danny, she is survived by her daughter, Sarah Christie and her husband, Ian of North Carolina; her son, Matthew Ritchie and wife, Sabrina of Virginia; brothers, Kent Mooberry and wife, Carmen of Arkansas, Marion Mooberry and wife, Angela of Indiana; as well as many special aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends and church family.
A celebration of life with be held at 7 p.m., on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church in Hinton. The family will receive friends following the service. The burial will be held privately.
Friends may view and sign the register book on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 from 10 a.m., until 5 p.m., at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
