WAYNESBORO, VA (Rocktown Now) — Local baker Lauren Wisherd through her bakery, Bonobos, has partnered with Wenonah Elementary School.

According to a release, Wisherd reached out to Wenonah Elementary with an offer to bake and donate loaves of bread for school families.

“One of the main values of Bonobos is supporting our community. We’ve been so fortunate to see our business grow, and we want to give back in the best way we know how- by baking. Food brings people together, and if we can help ease food insecurity in our community, that’s exactly what we want to do,” said Wisherd.

The effort is a collaboration between Wisherd and Wenonah Elementary School counselors Hannah Mills and Megan Reed, and first grade teacher Maddie Baker, who connected with Wisherd through social media. Plans are underway to deliver freshly baked bread to the school on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, with the possibility of adding other meal items like peanut butter, jelly, or sliced cheese to create ready-to-enjoy mini meal kits.

“We are so thankful to add Lauren not just as our neighbor but as a community partner. We are happy to be able to provide this support to many of our families during challenging times. Many families are experiencing food insecurity as a result of the government shutdown and what we hope is a temporary freeze of SNAP benefits. Providing fresh bread and pantry staples like peanut butter and jelly will hopefully help to fill a gap for the time being,” said Abby Arey, principal of Wenonah Elementary School.

Deliveries will take place monthly. For more information or to learn how to get involved, contact Abby Arey, principal, at aarey@waynesboro.k12.va.us
