AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — UPDATE: The driver of the van, Richard Heishman, 80, of Edinburg, VA, was charged with reckless driving according to Virginia State Police.

The crash remains under investigation.

An Augusta County Sheriff’s Office deputy was struck by a vehicle in the 2200 block of Scenic Highway in the Churchville area of Augusta County this morning, October 16, 2025.

According to a release, the deputy was conducting a traffic stop for speeding at approximately 6:04 a.m. At around 6:14 a.m., while outside of his patrol vehicle, the deputy was struck by a passing vehicle. The passenger-side mirror of the vehicle hit the deputy in the back, causing him to be thrown off the roadway.

The Virginia State Police responded and investigated the crash. The driver of the motor vehicle was cited for reckless driving.

The deputy was transported to Augusta Health by Augusta County Fire and Rescue, where he was treated and later released. He is reportedly doing well and recovering.
