HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) – UPDATE: The Arts Council of the Valley has moved the Inaugural Chalk Festival to Sunday, June 15, at Turner Pavillion due to forecasted severe weather.

Arts Council of the Valley (ACV) invites local artists, students, and artist groups to participate in the inaugural Harrisonburg Chalk Art Festival, Chalk It Up! to the Arts, June 14. Located along South Main St. during Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance’s Best.Weekend.Ever.

The Saturday festivities (12:00 pm – 5:00 pm) include an opportunity for artists to create their own chalk design in marked spots right on Main Street, a community chalk mosaic coloring space in the Asbury United Methodist Church parking lot, and large-scale feature drawings by experienced street painters Jennifer Chaparro and event co-organizer, Robert Mott.

Artists interested in participating in the Main Street chalking can choose among three sizes for their own chalk space: 4’ x 6’ vertical, 6’ x 8’ horizontal, or 8’ x 8’ square. Artists can learn more and register to participate for free at valleyarts.org/chalk-it-up-to-the-arts/.

On Friday, June 13, street artist Jennifer Chaparro will offer a free 3D chalk painting workshop (3:00 pm-5:30 pm) at the Turner Pavilion in downtown Harrisonburg. Chaparro is the founder of the International Street Painting Society, has traveled internationally for her chalk art, teaches workshops, and has won many awards.
