BRIDGEWATER, Va. (BC Athletics) – Bridgewater College women’s basketball bested Virginia Wesleyan on home court by a score of 61-54 Tuesday night behind a combined 36 points by Jaden Alsberry and Riley Corcoran.
Score: Bridgewater 61, Va. Wesleyan 54
Records: BCE 6-0 (1-0 ODAC), Va. Wesleyan 3-3 (0-1 ODAC)
How It Happened
• Jaden Alsberry got the Eagles going early in the game with the first bucket of the night. The Eagles jumped in front to an 8-2 edge after another Alsberry bucket, but a old-school three-point play from Bre Robinson sliced the lead. VWU closed to within two late in the frame, but a bucket frm Alsberry at the horn made it 16-12 after the opening quarter.
• VWU opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run to take the lead at 18-1, but makes from India Dailey and Corcoran gave BC the advantage back for a moment. From that point it was all Marlins. VWU closed the second quarter on a 14-6 run led by six from Keagan Schwab to take a 32-26 lead. A Corcoran bucket in the closing 20 seconds made it 32-28 for the Marlins at the break.
• The Marlins would get the lead up to seven points early in the third quarter, but that would be as far as the gap got as a trademark Stephanie Flamini defense to offense stretch ensued. BC ripped off a 14-0 run to take a 44-37 advantage as the Marlins were held without a point for nearly seven minutes. BC got contributions from all over the lineup during the scoring run as Corcoran and Alsberry each tallied multiple buckets while Alexis Edmonds, Jay Garcia and Jaiden Polston all added to the scoring run as well. Another old-fashioned three-point play by Robinson got VWU on the board but a pair of free throws from Rosemary Pierson made it 46-40 for the Eagles after 30 minutes.
• Virginia Wesleyan opened the first 2:18 of the fourth quarter without a field goal, but a make by Brianna Long brought the Marlins to within five after some makes at the charity stripe. The teams traded makes before a 9-2 BC run over the middle 4:15 of the frame pushed the lead to 61-49 with 2:21 to play after another Corcoran score. VWU closed the game on a 5-0 run but the damage ws already done.
Game Notes
• Despite the seven missed three-point shot attempts by Bridgewater, the Eagles still had the edge from the field going at a 46.3% clip to VWU’s 43.8% field goal percentage.
• The Eagles dominated in the paint, executing 50 points in the paint out of their total 61.
• Alsberry had a season-high 18 points along with three boards, a block, and a steal. Corcoran also finished with a season-high point total knocking down 18 points including two assists and one takeaway.
