AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA (Rocktown Now) — The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that occurred Thursday evening.

ACSO says they received a report shortly after 7:30pm that a juvenile had been shot on Ox Road in the Stuarts Draft area of Augusta County. The victim sustained a single gunshot wound from a handgun to the back shoulder area.

The juvenile was transported by the Stuarts Draft Rescue Squad to Augusta Health in stable condition and was later flown by Life Guard 12 from Lynchburg to the University of Virginia for further treatment.

Sheriff Donald Smith says, “the suspect in this incident is also a juvenile and will not be identified. Preliminary information indicates the juvenile was handling a handgun belonging to the parents when the shooting occurred.”

This incident remains under active investigation. No additional details will be released at this time.
