ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va – Virginia State Police released more information on Wednesday night’s fatal crash in Rockingham County that involved a pedestrian.

Sergeant Brent Coffey reports that the incident happened just after nine o’clock on U-S Route 11 near the intersection of Smithland Road north of Harrisonburg.

A 2011 Volkswagen Jetta was traveling north on Route 11 when a pedestrian ran east into the northbound travel lane. The Volkswagen was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian.

The pedestrian, 41-year-old Amanda Tyler of Madison, died at the scene. Coffey said she was wearing non-reflective dark clothing and was not in a crosswalk.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 19-year-old woman from Rockingham, was not injured and Coffey said she stopped immediately at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
