Attorney General Jason Miyares says Virginia is set to receive roughly 10 million dollars from two companies that played a role in the commonwealth’s opioid crisis.
Miyares announced yesterday that settlements have been reached with Publicis Health and Hikma Pharmaceuticals related to their reckless marketing, production, and sales of several controlled substances.
Publicis, a global marketing firm, agreed to “recognize the harm” caused by its attractive branding of highly-addicitve painkillers. It will also publish thousands of documents related to its work with Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin.
Meanwhile, Hikma Pharmaceuticals took responsibility for turning a blind eye to suspicious opioid orders by “potentially illegal distributors.”
The Virginia Department of Health says that in 2022, 29 in every 100-thousand residents died of a drug overdose.
