BROADWAY, Va – Construction of a new Lee Street (Route 259) bridge over Linville Creek in the Rockingham County town of Broadway requires temporary traffic delays the week of April 3-7, 2023. During daylight hours that week, contractors will be delivering and placing a dozen steel beams for the new bridge. All work is weather permitting.
Lee Street traffic will be stopped for roughly 10 to 15 minutes at a time as transport trucks deliver 70-foot beams and cranes remove them from the trucks. In between beam deliveries, motorists will use the traffic diversion and temporary bridge that have been in place since December 2022.
The new permanent bridge over Linville Creek is expected to open to traffic in November 2023. Lee Street motorists should expect minor traffic restrictions through spring 2024 during final phases of the project. During all stages of construction, pedestrians are prohibited from entering the work zone. There are no pedestrian accommodations on the temporary bridge.
The old Linville Creek bridge, which was removed in fall 2022, had two 12-foot travel lanes and a four-foot wide sidewalk along the southern side of the structure. The new bridge is being constructed in the same location but will be about seven feet wider and have a six-foot sidewalk.
In June 2022 VDOT awarded a $4,902,370 construction contract to Fairfield-Echols LLC of Fishersville, Va. The project has a contract completion date of April 26, 2024.
